Texas is hone to many exotics, Axis deer being one of the more popular "off season" animals you can hunt here year round. With private land hunts here in the Hill Country of Central Texas being the number 1 destination for your axis hunt. This area of Texas holds the largest free range axis deer herd in the world. Large ranches with rolling hills covered in live oak, mesquite, and cactus. These axis deer grow large in this area with protein available to them 365 days a year here at Texas trophy Whitetails. There's no guarantee what you will get with free range axis however we've killed some axis bucks just over 36" and a few that would score within 10"-15" of the world record axis buck.
Axis rut during May-early July. Most bucks in this area will drop their antlers in December/January, and be fully grown in velvet by the end of April. Starting in early may you see more hard antlered bucks and hunting them right before peak rut at this time can be nest if targeting a particular animal. Once the rut starts some of these bucks can travel miles. You also will start to see new bucks passing through in June. The "Roar", mating call can be heard throughout the rolling hills during this time and a really cool experience if you've never been on a axis deer hunt.
Most hunting is done over water and food. If it's dry, feeders and water gives you the best chance for success. If it's a wet Spring then the larger open meadows are good rifle spots and they'll still hit water troughs regularly in the heat of the day. Bowhunting and rifle hunts are available and offer high success on some of the best axis bucks in Texas here at Texas Trophy Whitetails.
